Lynn McIntosh sat down with local freelance writer Leanne Campbell for an interview:

.

1. What is one thing about your business that you really love?

Helping people with their health always has a new turn of events every day, because each person is so unique.

.
2. Was there a particular event or incident that led you down the path of nutrition & wanting to help people with their health?

I’ve always had a love for people and wanting to help them.

.
3. I noticed on your website something about the ’4 pillars of health’, can you tell me about that?

I am excited to recommend this easy to take packet of vitamins that will provide people with a base program of 4 foundations of nutrition…Vitamins & Minerals, Omega-3 fatty acids, Antioxidants & Clinically proven Probiotics.
.
4. If someone wanted to lose weight the healthy way, would they come to you? What advice would you give them?

Yes, I could certainly help them. The healthy way is a personalized program taking into account the person’s mind, body & spirit. They would make lifestyle changes that would last.

.
5. Who inspires you?
People sticking with their goals and getting wellness back into their body.

.
6. Tell me more about “The Health Team” … what is that all about?

We are a team of health professionals who have clients’ best interest at heart. Together we explore their food, supplements and homeopathic remedies that will cause them to have abundant energy and giving their bodies the ingredients to heal.

.
7. Has there been one or two clients in recent memory that you’ve really helped transform their health? Please share.

A Irritable Bowel client has had great success with food modifications after assessing her with the Meridian Stress Assessment. Her body has been working on healing itself. She has made lifestyle changes which prevent bowel upsets. Now she has no fears of travelling!

.

8. In your own words, please share about the Meridian Stress Assessment system … does it really work?

This system works much like acupuncture without needles. It measures the energy that passes through the circuits which involve the organs & tissues. It reflects what your organs are doing in real time. Areas of imbalance can be addressed and when the body is given the proper tools it will work better. When you have blood tests your body is always trying to normalize itself which sometimes causes tests to be normal when the client knows that there is someone off.

.
9. If you weren’t a Nutritionist or Health Coach, what else would you want to do?

I’d do something that involved helping people.

.
10. What do you consider your biggest success in life?

Giving birth to David.

.
11. With a new year ahead of you, what are your plans for your business?

God has brought me Beverly who is joining the Health Team. She is extremely knowledgeable in the alternative health field. She most recently set up (from scratch) an organic restaurant. Her passion for people and food sure shows when you speak with her.

.

Leanne Campbell is a local freelance writer and photographer.

This antioxidant-rich superfood may help protect against arthritis, diabetes and a long list of other diseases. There are many good reasons to pick up a pomegranate: they’re festive, seasonal, pack tons of antioxidants and, a new study suggests, may help to relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease.

.

In a recent study from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, researchers gave mice either a daily dose of pomegranate extract or water, in addition to their regular food. Ten days later, the mice were chemically induced to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

.

After six weeks, all the water-treated mice developed arthritis, but only two-thirds of the pomegranate-treated mice did. When the pomegranate drinkers did develop arthritis, it tended to set in later and with much less severity. What’s more, the pomegranate-treated mice had significantly lower levels of inflammatory compounds in their joint fluids, suggesting that the antioxidant polyphenols in pomegranate juice might short-circuit the inflammatory process that causes pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis.

.

Most studies link pomegranate’s benefits to its powerful punch of polyphenols—including anthocyanins (found in blue, purple and deep-red foods) and tannins (also found in wine and tea). In a study published earlier this year, researchers found that compared with other antioxidant-rich beverages including blueberry juice, cranberry juice and red wine, “pomegranate [juice] naturally has the highest antioxidant capacity,” reports David Heber, M,D. Ph.D., study collaborator and director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition.

Scientific names: Matricaria recutita L., Family: Asteraceae (daisy). Synonyms: Chamomilla, Chamomilla recutita, Matricaria chamomilla , Matricaria suavoelens, and Chamaemelum nobile (L.) All. Family: Asteraceae (daisy). Synonym: Anthemis nobilis L.

Common names: There are two species of chamomile: Matricaria recutita is known as German, Hungarian, wild, or genuine chamomile. Chamaemelum nobile is commonly called English, Roman, Scotch, garden, lawn, sweet, true, or common chamomile.

Efficacy-safety rating:

●●…Ethno or other evidence of efficacy.

Safety rating:

●…Little exposure or very minor concerns.

What is Chamomile?

M. chamomilla grows as an erect annual, and A. nobilis is a slow-growing perennial. The fragrant flowering heads of both plants are collected and dried for use as teas and extracts. They all are members of the Asteraceae (daisy) family.

What is Chamomile used for?

Chamomile is applied to the skin and mucous membrane for inflammations and skin diseases. It can be inhaled for sore throats, used in baths to soothe anal or genital inflammation, and used internally for stomach and intestinal spasms and inflammatory diseases. However, clinical proof supporting any of these uses of chamomile is limited.

Traditional and ethnobotanical uses

Known since Roman times for its medicinal properties, chamomile has been used as an antispasmodic and sedative in folk treatment of digestive and rheumatic disorders. Chamomile tea has been used to treat parasitic worm infections and as hair color and conditioner. Chamomile has been utilized as a skin wash to clean wounds and ulcers, and to increase the sloughing of necrotic tissue and promote granulation and proper healing. It also has been reported to have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, astringent, and deodorant properties. Various formulations of chamomile have been used to treat colic, cystitis, fever, flatulence, and vomiting.

What is the dosage of Chamomile?

Chamomile has been used as a tea for various conditions and as a topical cream. Typical oral doses are 9 to 15 grams per day. Gargles made from 8 g of chamomile flowers in 1,000 mL of water have been used in trials.

Is Chamomile safe?

Contraindications

Do not use if you are allergic to ragweed pollens.

Pregnancy/nursing

Poorly documented adverse reactions (eg, affects on menstrual cycle, reputed abortive effects, uterine stimulant). Avoid use during pregnancy.

No clinical data are available on the use of chamomile during lactation.

Interactions

Possible interactions have been reported with warfarin or cyclosporine. Because warfarin and cyclosporine have a narrow therapeutic index, patients taking either of these medications in more than modest amounts should avoid using chamomile at the same time.

No interactions caused by sedative effects or antispasmodic properties of chamomile have been reported.

Side Effects

Use of the tea and essential oil has resulted in anaphylactic shock, contact dermatitis, and other severe allergic reactions. Persons who are allergic to asters, chrysanthemums, ragweed, and other members of the Asteraceae daisy family should avoid chamomile.

Toxicities

Animal fed chamomile showed few ill effects.

The benefits of chlorophyll have been discovered for many years in the field of science and research. But what is chlorophyll, what makes it special and what benefits can you get out of it? This article presents some basic information about chlorophyll and its health benefits.

What is chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll is actually responsible for the green pigmentation in plants. What does chlorophyll do? Chlorophyll is what absorbs energy from the sun to facilitate photosynthesis in plants. Chlorophyll to plants is like blood to humans. It is important in many plant metabolic functions such as growth and respiration.

Interestingly, chlorophyll is chemically similar in composition to that of human blood, except that the central atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, while iron is central in human blood. This, and the fact that chlorophyll is central in plan metabolism, had prompted scientists to find out if chlorophyll can offer similar benefits to humans. A number of chlorophyll researches have been focused on finding out the potential chlorophyll health benefits in humans.

Health Benefits of Chlorophyll
True enough, chlorophyll has been seen to provide health benefits to those who take them. It has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Here are some of the known chlorophyll benefits:

It has been seen to help in the growth and repair of tissues.

Chlorophyll helps in neutralizing the pollution that we breathe in every day – a good supplement for smokers

It efficiently delivers magnesium and helps the blood in carrying the much needed oxygen to all cells and tissues.

It is also found to be useful in assimilating and chelating calcium and other heavy minerals.

It had been seen to have a good potential in stimulating red blood cells to improve oxygen supply.

Along with other vitamins such as A, C and E, chlorophyll has been seen to help neutralize free radicals that do damage to healthy cells.

Chlorophyll is also an effective deodorizer to reduce bad breath, urine, fecal waste, and body odor.

It may reduce the ability of carcinogens to bind with the DNA in different major organs in the body.

Chlorophyll may be useful in treating calcium oxalate stone ailments

It possesses some anti-atherogenic activity as well.

It can be used to treat infected wounds naturally.

These are only a few of the multitude benefits that chlorophyll can do to the body.

It has antimutagenic and anti-carcinogenic properties so that it may be helpful in protecting your body against toxins and in reducing drug side effects.

When your energy runs clear, your emotional distress disappears. This has been experienced dramatically by many who formerly suffered from anxiety, depression, phobias, panic and panic attacks, past trauma, histories of abuse, anger, rage, obsessions and other emotional distress. It is well known that each of us has a powerful and complex system of Energy flow that permeates and radiates from our bodies.

It is invisible to us, but it is concretely and demonstrably real. It has been known about for centuries and has recently been verified using special photographic techniques.

The condition of our Energy System affects us immediately and profoundly. Our feelings are so important.

When the flow of our Energy is balanced, we feel good, we “hum”, our energy is strong and we have plenty of personal power. When we consider a disturbing thought or painful issue in our lives, we can actually feel the energy weakening our bodies in the form of negative emotion.

When the flow of energy in our system is disrupted, we feel anger, fear, hurt, depression, shame, etc. This disturbance in our energy flow, associated with the thought, zaps our natural strength and wellbeing. Now, with Energy Psychology methods, we can balance this disturbance in the Energy System!

A Nutritional Program begins with developing a bioenergetics stress profile of the entire body systems using the Meridian Stress Assessment System (MSAS). This screening process will provide nutritional insight from which a food program, homeopathic remedies and supplementation regimen can be recommended. The profile can also be used as a periodic assessment of progress.

Using acupuncture points, electrical conductivity measurements are taken of the body’s organs and organ systems. As a person moves toward or away from health, the condition of any particular organ or system can be sensed along the meridians represented by these acupuncture points. These patterns of organ stress are then matched to a tailor-made program for you that will begin the process to restore each system to an appropriate balance.

In the early 1950’s Reinhold Voll, a German medical doctor, developed an electronic testing device for finding acupuncture points electrically. He was successful in finding acupuncture points and demonstrating that these points, known to Chinese acupuncturists for millennia, had a different resistance to a tiny electrical current passed through the body, than did the adjacent tissues.

The meridian theory is the study of the physiological functions and changes along the meridians and the related organs. Meridians are also known as “sensory neurological pathways.” The function of the meridian system is to transport energy and blood, to maintain conductivity, and to resist invasion of external factors that contribute to disease. The endless circulation of energy and blood in the meridians is responsible for the maintenance of life and the variety of functions that support it.

Blockage of energy in any of the meridians causes system imbalance and predisposes the body to disease. The meridian theory has been the guiding principle for the clinical practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Changes in the energetic system are present long before physical symptoms manifest themselves. There are no needles or puncturing of the skin. A low level electric stimulus is passed through the body while the client holds a brass handle in one hand. A reading is taken for each point and stored in the computer. We can also test for and determine the body’s electrical reaction to many of the stress producing substances and influences of modern day living. By using an extensive data base, we ask the body what it’s need are in relation to the effects of environmental irritants, food stimuli, heavy metals, drugs, hormonal imbalances, chemical toxicity, molds, fungi, dental problems and vitamin and mineral deficiencies, etc.

Your body’s responses to these elements are shown on the Meridian Stress Assessment System (MSAS), with readings ranging between 0 and 100. Readings in the 45 – 55 range suggest balance in that point and meridian. Readings above 55 show excessive energy and suggest inflammation or sensitivity. Readings below 45 demonstrate reduced energy, weakness and a chronic or organ degeneration. Accurate and professional interpretation of the results of the test are most important and are given to the client after the test is completed. An assessment of nutritional conditions and the treatment of nutritional related disorders are based on your individual biochemical metabolism.

The analysis may involve the introduction and implementation of food and dietary programs, vitamin, mineral, and botanical supplementation, and/or detoxification programs. Many conditions are related to improper or incomplete digestion and elimination and result in nutritional deficiencies. Allergies can also be a result of this mechanism.
The purpose of Meridian Stress Assessment testing is to provide an energetic profile of your present condition. We can use the test results and the results of a nutritional analysis as a guideline to develop an individualized program that will enable you to become increasingly involved with and responsible for your health. This technology is used in various health care practices around the world!

Published in Alive, #237, www.alive.com, July 2002

The human body is a highly efficient battery and power generator. It can reach peak performance levels for lengthy periods of time on very little fuel. That’s more than you can say for a Lamborghini! So how do we keep our engines running at peak performance? In this high-tech world it is time to look at a low-tech solution.

Your body needs natural foods for energy. High-energy foods are the same pesticide-free, natural, fresh items our ancestors ate. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and grains–the very things we often avoid or replace with poor quality foods.

Before we add energy boosters, we have to get rid of our energy stealers. The three major culprits are caffeine, sugar and white flour.

Common Energy Stealers

Are you one of the typical North Americans who stumble to the kitchen every morning to grab that first cup of rocket fuel? Most of us drink coffee to get us going, but since coffee strips our bodies of essential minerals, it ultimately steals our energy. Caffeine is like putting your foot on an accelerator–the energy you think you are getting is really a drug-induced high! Caffeine throws the body into a state of confusion, causing more stress and leaving us hyper, shaky or exhausted.

The other energy stealers, sugar and white flour, are often partners in crime. That donut may taste good, but it will let you down fast. You may first feel a burst of energy as it causes your blood sugar to rocket, but then your pancreas must work overtime to clear the sugar from your bloodstream, causing your sugar levels–and your energy–to crash. Eat too many sugary and starchy snacks and, over time, you’ll exhaust your pancreas and adrenal glands and find yourself in a perpetual energy slump. These energy stealers also put you at risk for developing hypoglycemia, diabetes and heart disease.

Top Up Your Fluids

Just as flushing your car systems is part of a tune-up, you need to continuously flush your body systems with water for peak performance.

To calculate how much water your body needs, just divide your body poundage in half. This figure is the number of ounces you should drink daily to keep your body hydrated.

Juicing is an excellent way to cleanse and fuel your body. If you have a tough time eating your 10 daily servings of fruit and veggies, try drinking them. Freshly blended juice from raw, organic produce contains the most digestive enzymes, giving you maximum nutrient absorption. It is the perfect high-octane fuel, helping rid the body of accumulated toxins and setting up a healthy cycle of nutrition and excretion. You may experience a healthy “lift” of vitality as your cells become free of congestion and your blood sugar levels become stabilized.

Easy Energy Boosters

1. Eat raw, organic foods as much as possible. The more original state a food is in, the more benefit it has (i.e., carrots with the tops are better than bagged baby carrots).

2. Munch on veggies. If the only veggies you can eat are baby carrots, they are better than no carrots.

3. Break the fast. Eat breakfast, and experiment with leftovers. Try brown rice with veggies.

4. Eat porridge on an empty stomach. This increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid, and the protein will be better metabolized.

5. Graze on small meals. Skipped meals can cause your fat burners to shut down and hold onto fat.

6. Carry a little bag of trail mix for snacks. Mix crunchy health cereal (no added sugar or salt) with raw almonds, raw sunflower seeds and raisins.

7. Popcorn is a good food. For a real treat, sprinkle brewer’s yeast on buttered popcorn.

8. Sip filtered water throughout the day. It will cleanse your cells and maximize food absorption.

9. Add chlorophyll drops to your filtered water. This helps purify your body.

10. Drink green tea. It’s rich in flavonoid compounds, is a potent antioxidant and has anti-allergy activity.

11. Replace white flour with spelt, kamut or rye. Cooked grains help maintain blood sugar and metabolism.

12. Eat millet and buckwheat. These two miracle foods provide vigour without the lethargy sometimes found with meats.

13. Erase midday slump. Add one teaspoon brewer’s yeast and one teaspoon fresh wheat germ to a glass of any citrus juice or combination of freshly juiced fruit.

By making changes in our diet, we can energize our bodies and even eradicate most of our day-to-day health issues such as obesity, skin disorders, thinning and weak hair, weak nails, yeast infections, bowel disorders, diminished muscle mass, wrinkles and low sex drive.

Remember, when in doubt, eat like our ancestors. Then you’ll have the energy to zoom through our modern world like a high-performance race car instead puttering through it like a broken-down station wagon!
